## Key facts

- **Exploitation phase:** Background Noise. Continuous low-level scanning or exploitation attempts are observed, mostly opportunistic and automated.
- **CVSS score:** 8.5
- **Public exploit available:** Yes
- **Affected products:** Karel IP Phone IP1211
- **Weaknesses:** CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal'))
- **Tags:** iot, management_panel

## Description

A path traversal vulnerability exists in the Karel IP1211 IP Phone's web management panel. The /cgi-bin/cgiServer.exx endpoint fails to properly sanitize user input to the page parameter, allowing remote authenticated attackers to access arbitrary files on the underlying system by using crafted path traversal sequences. Exploitation evidence was observed by the Shadowserver Foundation on 2025-02-02 UTC.

## CrowdSec analysis

[CVE-2025-34023](https://euvd.enisa.europa.eu/vulnerability/CVE-2025-34023) is a high-severity path traversal vulnerability in the Karel IP1211 IP Phone's web management panel, specifically affecting the /cgi-bin/cgiServer.exx endpoint. This flaw allows remote authenticated attackers to access arbitrary files on the device by manipulating the page parameter with crafted path traversal sequences. Successful exploitation could lead to unauthorized disclosure of sensitive system files, potentially facilitating further attacks or compromising device integrity.

CrowdSec has been tracking this vulnerability and its exploits since 8th of April 2026.

According to CrowdSec data, while opportunistic exploitation dominates, a portion of threat actors trying to exploit CVE-2025-34023 apply basic targeting methods such as port or service detection. This indicates emerging patterns of selective targeting.
CrowdSec network telemetry also shows that exploitation of CVE-2025-34023 has significantly declined over the past week. Attack volumes are well below the long-term average, suggesting attackers are rapidly losing interest. The vulnerability appears to be falling out of active use across most threat landscapes.

Attackers exploit the `/cgi-bin/cgiServer.exx` endpoint by manipulating the `page` parameter with path traversal sequences (e.g., `../../../../etc/passwd`) to access sensitive files on Karel IP Phone IP1211 devices.
