## Description

Mongoose before 8.8.3 can improperly use $where in match, leading to search injection.

## CrowdSec analysis

[CVE-2024-53900](https://euvd.enisa.europa.eu/vulnerability/CVE-2024-53900) is a high-severity vulnerability in Mongoose prior to version 8.8.3 that allows improper use of the $where operator in match queries, resulting in search injection. This flaw could enable remote attackers to inject malicious JavaScript code into database queries, potentially leading to unauthorized data access or manipulation.

CrowdSec has been tracking this vulnerability and its exploits since 26th of November 2025.

CrowdSec network observations suggest that most exploitation of CVE-2024-53900 involves focused reconnaissance to identify viable targets. Attackers typically tailor their campaigns based on system exposure and configuration. It is unlikely that a given attack is accidental.
Telemetry from the CrowdSec network also shows that exploitation activity for CVE-2024-53900 remains steady week-over-week. Attack volumes are consistent with long-term trends, indicating sustained interest from threat actors. CVE-2024-53900 continues to be an active part of the threat landscape and will likely remain this way for the forseeable future.

Attackers exploit endpoints that accept user-controlled query parameters such as `view[match][$where]` to inject malicious JavaScript expressions, often targeting URLs with patterns like `?view[path]=...&view[match][$where]=...` to achieve remote code execution via NoSQL injection in vulnerable Mongoose applications.
