## Key facts

- **Exploitation phase:** Limited Exploitation. The vulnerability is known but shows very limited attacker interest or exploitation activity.
- **CVSS score:** 8.6
- **Public exploit available:** Yes
- **Affected products:** NetAlertX
- **Weaknesses:** CWE-698 (Execution After Redirect (EAR)); CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory ('Path Traversal'))
- **Tags:** iot

## Description

NetAlertX 24.7.18 before 24.10.12 allows unauthenticated file reading because an HTTP client can ignore a redirect, and because of factors related to strpos and directory traversal, as exploited in the wild in May 2025. This is related to components/logs.php.

## CrowdSec analysis

[CVE-2024-48766](https://euvd.enisa.europa.eu/vulnerability/CVE-2024-48766) is a high-severity path traversal vulnerability in NetAlertX versions prior to 24.10.12, specifically affecting the logs.php component. This flaw allows unauthenticated attackers to read arbitrary files on the server by exploiting directory traversal techniques, potentially exposing sensitive information. The vulnerability has been actively exploited in the wild, making it a significant risk for affected systems.

CrowdSec has been tracking this vulnerability and its exploits since 15th of April 2026.

According to CrowdSec data, while opportunistic exploitation dominates, a portion of threat actors trying to exploit CVE-2024-48766 apply basic targeting methods such as port or service detection. This indicates emerging patterns of selective targeting.
Additionally, according to week-over-week analysis by CrowdSec, exploitation of CVE-2024-48766 is surging. Attack volumes are spiking well above historical norms, indicating widespread and escalating interest from threat actors. CVE-2024-48766 is currently experiencing high visibility and active exploitation across the internet.

Attackers exploit this vulnerability by sending crafted POST requests to `/php/components/logs.php` with a `filePath` parameter containing directory traversal sequences (e.g., `../../../../..//etc/passwd`) to read arbitrary files from the server.
