## CrowdSec analysis

[CVE-2023-40924](https://euvd.enisa.europa.eu/vulnerability/CVE-2023-40924) is a directory traversal vulnerability in SolarView Compact versions prior to 6.00. This flaw allows remote attackers to access sensitive files and directories outside the intended web root, potentially exposing confidential information and system data.

CrowdSec has been tracking this vulnerability and its exploits since 22nd of May 2026.

According to CrowdSec data, while opportunistic exploitation dominates, a portion of threat actors trying to exploit CVE-2023-40924 apply basic targeting methods such as port or service detection. This indicates emerging patterns of selective targeting.
Additionally, according to week-over-week analysis by CrowdSec, exploitation of CVE-2023-40924 is surging. Attack volumes are spiking well above historical norms, indicating widespread and escalating interest from threat actors. CVE-2023-40924 is currently experiencing high visibility and active exploitation across the internet.

Attackers exploit the `/downloader.php` endpoint by supplying path traversal sequences and a null byte (`%00`) in the `file` parameter to access sensitive files such as `/etc/passwd`. This technique allows unauthenticated users to read arbitrary files from vulnerable SolarView Compact systems.
